A month-by-month rhythm for northern-hemisphere beekeepers. Timing is regional — check your local extension service for your area's exact dates.

January

Order bees and equipment early. Plan this season's goals. Read, take a course, join the club.

February

Assemble and paint boxes. Confirm bee pickup dates. Check stored comb for wax moth.

March

First warm-day checks: cluster position, stores. Place the new hive in its spot.

April

Install packages or nucs when weather settles. Feed 1:1 syrup; monitor early buildup.

May

Regular inspections. Add space early. Watch for swarm cells as colonies grow.

June

Peak buildup: supers on for the flow, swarm prevention, first mite wash if strong.

July

Honey production. Ventilation and water are essential. Monthly mite monitoring.

August

First harvests where flows permit. Keep an eye on mite counts climbing toward fall.

September

Harvest the surplus in cool weather. Start fall mite treatment as brood declines.

October

Feed 2:1 to winter weight. Reduce entrances, add mouse guards, store supers.

November

Gently heft hives; top up with fondant if light. Ensure upper ventilation; stop opening hives.

December

Keep entrances clear of snow and ice. Maintain and build equipment. Plan spring.
