Types of Hive Tool
- Standard pry bar: a flat, slightly hooked blade. Cheap, effective, and the classic first tool.
- J-hook tool: adds a hook that grips and lifts frames out without crushing bees — the best all-rounder for beginners.
- Frame grip / lifter: a pincer that clamps a frame's top bar; useful if you have limited grip strength or arthritis.
- Cutout / scraper tool: a wide blade for removing burr comb and cleaning boxes; also handy for hive beetle management.

Using It Without Wrecking Frames
- Warm the blade in the sun before prying glued boxes — less cracking, less noise.
- Slide the tool down the side of the box, not between bees and comb, then twist gently.
- Lift frames from the ends to keep the top bar level; tilting drops pollen and rolls bees.
- Scrape propolis into a bucket, not onto the ground — it attracts robbers.
