Varroa: The #1 Threat

Varroa destructor is a parasitic mite that feeds on bee fat bodies and spreads viruses, especially deformed wing virus.   • Synthetic miticides (amitraz, fluvalinate) — potent but resistance-prone; rotate actives.

Many brood problems are symptoms of a weak colony — which usually means a queen issue or a mite issue. Fix the root cause, not just the symptom.

A Simple Monthly Health Routine

  1. Look at the entrance on every visit — bees flying normally? Dead bees, debris, or deformed wings?
  2. Read one brood frame — solid pattern, eggs present, no sunken cappings.
  3. Count mites — alcohol wash or sugar roll in spring, midsummer, and early fall.
  4. Weigh the stores — heft the hive; feed if light.
  5. Write it down — dates, numbers, and actions. Patterns only appear in a logbook.
